RFC 8058 specifies an automated mechanism for email clients (like the webmail interface of Gmail or Apple Mail) to present an "Unsubscribe" banner at the very top of the email. When clicked, the mail client sends an HTTP POST request directly to the sender's HTTPS endpoint with the payload List-Unsubscribe=One-Click.
Why is It Critical for Deliverability?
If recipients cannot easily find an unsubscribe button, they click "Report Spam" instead. Maintaining a spam complaint rate below 0.1% (and never above 0.3%) is required by Google. Providing one-click unsubscribe converts would-be spam complaints into clean, harmless opt-outs.
